What Stet keeps, and why

Stet is a writing tool from Marinette ("we," "our," or "us"). You paste a draft, and Stet goes through it one sentence at a time. Most writing tools promise that nothing you type is kept. Stet does keep it, on purpose. This page says exactly what, why, and for how long, so you can decide before you paste.

Nobody signs in

There are no accounts. We do not ask who you are, and we do not know whose draft is whose.

What is kept

As you type, Stet sends the draft to our server to read it, and sends back the marks. That copy is not kept. Keeping starts the moment you make your first choice on a sentence, or ask for the first fix. From then on Stet records:

the draft, as it was when you began
who you said the draft was for, and where it was going (an email, a web page, and so on)
each sentence you asked for a fix on, the problems Stet found in it, and the fix it suggested
what you did with each sentence: took the suggestion, kept your own, or rewrote it yourself
the draft as it was when you finished, or when you closed the page

Stet also keeps a scrambled version of your internet connection's address. That is only so one person cannot use up the day's limit for everyone. It cannot be turned back into the address, and it is not tied to you.

Stet does not keep your name, your email address, or anything you did not type into it.

Why we keep it

A real person reads them. Stet's marks come from a set of rules about writing. The only way to find out where those rules are right, and where they are wrong, is to see real drafts and what real people did with the suggestions. When a draft teaches us something, what goes into the rules is the lesson, in our own words. Your sentences do not. Your draft is never published, never shown to anyone outside Marinette, and never used to advertise anything.

Please do not paste passwords, account numbers, medical or legal details, or anything about another person that they would not want a stranger to read. A good test: if you would not forward it to a friend, do not paste it here. If something private does get in, email us and we will remove it.

Where it goes

Drafts are stored in a database run by Cloudflare, Inc., our hosting provider. Each sentence you ask for a fix on is sent to Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude AI, with the rest of the draft alongside so the fix fits around it, and Claude writes the suggestion. Before Stet asks for a fix, Cloudflare also runs a quick check that you are a person and not a program. Cloudflare's and Anthropic's own privacy policies govern their systems. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared beyond those two.

How long

Up to one year. Stet deletes anything older than that. You can have yours removed sooner: email us the first line of the draft and roughly when you pasted it, and we will delete it.

What we measure

This page uses Google Analytics, the same as the rest of our site: how many people open it, and how many fixes get asked for. Never the text.

Children's privacy

Stet is made for adults writing emails, listings and web pages. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the date at the top of this page when we do. Continued use of Stet after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
